Sainte-Foy is a true Alpine village, off the main road from Bourg St Maurice to Val d'Isère. It is less than half an hour's drive from three of the finest ski areas in France - Val d'Isère, Tignes, La Plagne and Les Arcs - yet it feels a million miles from the hustle and bustle of the big resorts and has enough skiing of it's own to keep an advanced skier happy and offers unlimited and varied off-Piste skiing in a beautiful un spoilt wilderness. In the evenings, Sainte-Foy is quietish but there are some decent places for drinks and dinner and an authentic French village ambience.
The resort was opened in the winter of 91/92, a few miles above the village of Sainte-Foy. There are three four-seater chair lifts (and a new 6 person lift, opening up another area to skiers) rising in succession up the mountain to 2040m, for pisted red and blue runs and off Piste skiing through the trees, which makes this area popular in whiteout conditions. Then the third lift takes you to 2620m, for runs covering an area which has the potential to be larger than that of Ste Foys more famous neighbours. Mostly the slopes are uncrowded and the snow is in excellent condition, (Ski instructors from Val d'Isère and Tignes come here on their days off.) One of the best known and most spectacular off-Piste runs is the Monal. From the highest chairlift you drop over the back into a wilderness of powder, heading towards the Lac du Clou, after a short uphill walk it's off again towards the hamlet of Le Monal which is deserted during the winter months, but good for a rest break. You now have a walk on skis along a slight uphill traverse to rejoin the Ste Foy ski area. Other off Piste routes include; Les Pigettes which takes you down to the road up to Val d'Isère and one that takes you down to the village of Sainte-Foy.
Sainte Foy has been going through a period of developement, with many more chalets and apartments having been built, with more to come. New bars, restaurants and shops have opened. New pistes have been created, snow canon installed and for next season (2007) a new ski lift. Sainte Foy is being developed as a luxury ski resort and has avoided the usual concrete eyesore that many French ski resorts became. Sainte Foy is a beautiful ski resort with typically Savoyarde, timber and stone buildings, both old and new and thanks to the building rules this is how it will continue.
